CHAPTER 15

The conversation with Camron lodges itself under my skin and stays there, a painful splinter that only digs in deeper when I try to pick it out. It feels like it might rip me apart.

And again, I’m itching to get away from the shuttle. I’ve sworn not to visit Cam again, but after our conversation here, the feeling of his presence is weightier than ever. I want to get to Caligula right now, to put as much distance between us as I can. And space. And walls. Layers and layers of walls.

As I’ve mentioned, though, the fleet ships fly at a pretty significant distance from one another. To avoid Xavier’s trolling fighters, we’ve decided to swing around the outside of the fleet and cut a big arc around and back. That way, we’ll be able to approach lagging Caligula from the rear. We’ll find a way inside. Hopefully, we’ll find the Resistance there.

And when I say ‘we,’ I mean ‘they,’ because I had no part in any of these decisions. Which probably makes them good ones. If I had my say, I’d probably beeline it through the worst of the danger zone just to escape my delusional, murderous ex-boyfriend.

The whole swing-around plan means there’s time to shower—which, trust me, is extremely necessary at this point—and sleep, too. It’s a real, solid stretch of sleep time, during which no one wakes me with lurching ships or shouting matches or unwelcome boarding parties. I simply get to sleep.

When I wake up, I eat a nutrition bar and chug some water. And then I go looking for Sierra.

It’s amazing what a good night’s sleep will do. I feel like I can tackle major problems again and actually hope to survive the experience. It’s not that the rest made me more patient, exactly—it was sleep, not a personality change—but it does throw yesterday’s conversation with Noah into a new light.

I’m not too proud to admit it; Noah was right. Not necessarily about Cam being willing to talk to me, which crashed and burned spectacularly. Though it was worth a shot, I guess.

What I mean is that he’s definitely right about me not being able to fight. Now that I’ve had time to process the comment, my pride can’t convince me otherwise.

Yes, I did hold my own back there on Hadrian, but that was out of sheer luck. And Roger’s trash-bin-lifting adrenaline spike, I guess. I could easily become a liability in our next fight.

I need help, and I figure Sierra’s my best bet.

She’s not in the main part of the shuttle with the other champions, so I take the elevator down to search elsewhere. I haven’t done a lot of exploring—it’s not like there’s been much time—and I find myself in a big, circular room I haven’t seen before. It’s kind of like the space above, only it’s got a bank of computers in the corner. Otherwise, it’s totally empty.

Empty of furniture, anyway. In the middle of the space, Noah’s sitting with his legs stretched out in front of him.
